Forensic Expert Witness/Litigation Consultants
Fire Design has expert witness resources in most categories of fire protection. Our associates actively participate in deposition and trial testimony, and work closely with legal teams in evaluating cases and rendering advice concerning fire and explosion related issues.

Pyrotechnics
Fire Chiefs are often called upon to inspect fireworks shows for safety. NFPA-1123 gives specific duties with regard to the safe conduct of a fireworks display. Fire Design is familiar with the equipment and common errors that lead to accidents. With safety in mind we can provide the proper setup or inspection to avoid accidents.

Building & Fire Code Analysis

Identification of applicable code requirements of specific projects and the development of alternate methods of protection (code equivalencies) that will reduce construction costs and/or permit unique design criteria.

Due Diligence Inspections and Evaluation
Confidential inspections and evaluation of new and existing properties for building and fire code compliance, ADA compliance; and of undeveloped sites for fire protection and building construction requirements, including water supplies and other critical elements affecting site selection.

Hazardous Materials/Chemicals
Determination of allowable inventory levels; commodity compatibility and compartmentalization; explosion venting calculations; fire detection and suppression systems design criteria; and development of hazardous materials management plans complying with state and local regulations.

Code Application Conflict Resolution with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
Participate in technical meetings with fire officials to fully explain a projects unique characteristics, and alternatives to prescriptive building and fire code requirements; and gaining approvals for fire and life safety alternative design approaches. Many Fire Design associates are former state and local fire officials and are involved with technical committees, professional organizations, and the like, which develop into strong professional relationships between themselves and the AHJ. The AHJ plays a key role with design approval, and because our associates have worked as the AHJ and/or with the AHJ in the development of sound building and fire codes and standards, Fire Design has earned the reputation for developing reasonable and safe design approaches for all its projects while maintaining a client focus.

Fire Modeling
Modeling fire growth, movement, and smoke development to determine the most appropriate method(s) for design to reduce the fire and life safety risk.

ADA Code Analysis
Auditing and evaluation of existing accessibility conditions, review of design plans and documents, and the development of reasonable approaches for code compliance.

Smoke Control System Design and Testing
Development of design approach for compliance with design criteria, including identification of fire scenarios, fire modeling, fire size, and development of critical control diagrams. Testing includes monitoring construction, sequence of operation and verification, assistance with the "all system" tests with the AHJ, and any retesting that may be required.

Code Development, Monitoring, and Representation
Representation at various building and fire codes and standards proceedings before state and local governmental agencies and model code publishers as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Code Council (ICC). Development of code and standards and revisions, and meeting with the various decision makers to enhance the probability of approval and adoption. Summary reports of changes and actions are developed for the client.

Product Certification and/or Registration
Fire Design provides assistance to manufacturers of fire safety products with the selection of the appropriate National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and/or fire agency and with securing the appropriate certification and/or registration of fire safety product.

Fire & Life Safety Master Planning
Fire and life safety analysis and surveys to determine the conditions of a fire sprinkler and fire alarm system and the distribution of water supplies such as fire hydrants. Our fire and life safety analysis report details the occupancy classification, building construction, existing conditions, code requirements, and an egress analysis to bring the facilities up to current code requirements.

Pre-Emergency & Disaster Planning
Effective pre-emergency planning is necessary in the event of an emergency to prepare occupants for major building emergencies. Fire Design emergency planning includes the development of building/tenant programs that comply with state and local regulations; time egress analysis; evacuation planning system reviews and testing; fire alarm and security system integration; and the development of egress diagram placards.

Code Compliance Inspections
Fire Design conducts site inspections to determine code compliance of existing buildings. Our associates prepare preliminary reports that identify applicable building and fire code compliance, identify non-compliance areas, and develop plans for reasonable compliance.

Drawing, Specification and Document Review
Review of construction drawings, specifications and other submittals such as automatic fire sprinkler system and/or fire alarm system shop drawings, samples, and other information to determine conformance with alternative design concepts, bid documents, and compliance with applicable code requirements of the appropriate AHJ.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
Conducts code compliance inspections and evaluation of health care facilities seeking compliance with fire safety requirements of the JCAHO. Suggests alternative mitigating measures and alternative methods of compliance to satisfy JCAHO requirements.
